Invest in YOU: 7 Smart Steps to Request PD Funding from Your School

Tips to confidently advocate for the PD opportunities that will elevate your teaching and empower your students

Professional development (PD) is essential for educators who want to stay current, grow their skills, and bring fresh ideas into the classroom. However, participating in workshops, attending conferences, or enrolling in courses often comes with a price tag. The good news? Many schools and districts have funds set aside for teacher development—you just need to know how to ask.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you confidently request PD funding.

  1. Identify Your Goals

Before you even draft a request, clarify what you want to achieve. Ask yourself:

•  What specific skills or knowledge will I gain?
•
How will this benefit my students, team, or school?
•
Does this align with school, district, or campus goals?

Being clear about your objectives will make your request more compelling.

  1. Do Your Research

Gather all the details about the PD opportunity:

•  Name, date, and location of the event
•
Cost breakdown (registration, travel, lodging, materials)
 Agenda or syllabus
•  Credentials of the presenters or organization

Having this information ready shows you’re serious and well-prepared

  1. Draft a Thoughtful Proposal

Frame your request as a professional proposal. Include:

•  Purpose: Why this PD matters to you and your students
•
Benefits: How it aligns with school goals or curriculum initiatives
Budget: A clear, itemized list of costs
•  Follow-up Plan: How you’ll share what you learn (e.g. lead a PD session or create a resource)

Keep it concise but persuasive.

  1. Talk to the Right People

Find out who handles PD funding—your principal, academic officer, department head, or district office. Schedule a meeting or send a formal email. Be respectful of their time and open to feedback.

Tip: If possible, time your request before budget planning cycles or at the start of the school year when funds are more likely to be available.

  1. Provide Supporting Documents

Attach or link to:

•  Event brochure or website
•
Registration form
 Budget estimate
•  Any endorsements or recommendations

This makes it easier for decision-makers to approve your request quickly.

  1. Be Flexible

If full funding isn’t possible, ask if partial support is available. Regardless of the outcome, express appreciation for the consideration. If no funding is given for this opportunity, ask for feedback or think of other options—What would be more likely to be approved? Can PD be added to next year’s budget?

  1. Follow Up and Share

If you receive funding, follow through on your plan to share what you learned with your peers. This builds trust, expands learning to others in your organization, and increases the likelihood of future support. Offer to present key takeaways from your PD experience to key administrative leaders as well.

Final Thoughts

With preparation, professionalism, and a clear vision, you can make a strong case for support. Asking for PD funding might feel intimidating but remember, investing in your growth is an investment in you and in your students’ success. You’re all worth the investment!
