Designing for Transfer: Practical Strategies to Help Students Use Learning Beyond the Classroom
Students can often complete assignments, recall definitions, and pass assessments—yet still struggle when asked to use what they learned in a new situation. That gap is the heart of transfer: the ability to apply knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. For instructors, designing for transfer means planning learning experiences that move students from “I know it” to “I understand it” to “I can use it.”
Why Transfer Matters
Transfer is what makes learning useful after instruction ends. A student who can define profit margin has demonstrated recall; a student who can diagnose why a business is losing money despite steady sales is transferring learning. The difference is not just difficulty—it is the kind of thinking required. Transfer asks students to interpret context, select relevant information, apply concepts, justify decisions, and adapt when the situation is unfamiliar.
Start with Real-World Use
One of the most important shifts instructors can make is to begin planning with this question: What should students be able to do with this learning outside the lesson? This reflects the backward design logic of Understanding by Design, which emphasizes long-term transfer, authentic performance, and alignment among goals, evidence, and learning activities. For example, instead of starting with “students will solve area problems,” an instructor might start with “students will determine how much material is needed for an irregular space while staying within budget.” That framing immediately creates a more authentic context, one that requires students to make decisions rather than simply follow a procedure.
Use Authentic, Slightly Messy Tasks
Real-world problems rarely arrive as clean worksheets. They include constraints, incomplete information, competing priorities, and the need to explain a choice. Instructors can support transfer by redesigning tasks so students must apply learning in realistic situations.
- Instead of asking students to memorize OSHA vocabulary, ask them to identify safety hazards during a workplace inspection.
- Instead of asking students to recall nutrition terms, ask them to create a meal plan for an athlete with specific goals.
- Instead of asking students to solve ten equations, ask them to recommend materials for a project while accounting for cost, waste, and measurement constraints.
Teach the Same Skill Across Multiple Contexts
Transfer improves when students encounter the same underlying skill in more than one setting. If the skill is managing money to make decisions, students might practice it through personal budgeting, business operating costs, travel planning, or event planning. The content changes, but the transferable skill remains the same. This helps students move beyond thinking, “This is a budgeting assignment,” and toward thinking, “This is a decision-making process I can use in many situations.” That recognition is a powerful marker of transfer.
Build in Reflection
Students do not always make transfer connections on their own. Reflection prompts help them notice where learning applies and how it connects to future use. Instructors can add brief reflection moments before, during, or after an activity.
- Where could you use this skill outside this class?
- How is this situation similar to something you have seen before?
- What changed in this new context, and what stayed the same?
- How might this learning help you in a future course, workplace, or daily-life decision?
A Quick Redesign Process for Instructors

Start with the real-world application. Ask what someone would actually do with this learning beyond school.

Identify the underlying skill. Name the transferable thinking students need, such as interpreting data, evaluating evidence, planning within constraints, or communicating a recommendation.

Expand into multiple contexts. Give students more than one opportunity to apply the skill in different settings.

Add reflection. Ask students to explain where else the learning could be useful and how they know.
Before You Finalize a Lesson, Ask These Questions
- Can students use this learning next week?
- Can they use it next year?
- Can they use it outside of school?
- Can they use it in another subject?
- Can they use it in a workplace or community setting?
If the answer is no, the lesson may still build important foundational knowledge—but it may need a stronger transfer opportunity. Even a small redesign can help students see learning as something they can carry forward.
