Soft skills, 21st century skills, employability skills, work-readiness skills…the terms may vary, but experts agree that these skills are essential for success during interviews and on the job. In fact, when technical skills are equal among job candidates, the final decision is often made based on the soft skills exhibited during the interviewing process.
As your students move toward graduation, apprenticeships, internships, and summer jobs, it’s a good time to remind them of some of the most sought-after soft skills that employers want.
1. Professionalism
Professionalism is expected in every workplace. Make a good first impression, be punctual, and have a positive attitude. Remember that once you are hired, you represent your employer, so you want to display good character, be honest and respectful, and have sound judgment.
2. Self-Management Skills
Self-management is your ability to control emotions, actions, and behaviors in a productive way. Accept constructive criticism, manage your time, prioritize key tasks, set goals, and manage your stress. From problem solving to critical thinking and decision making, honing your self-management skills will help you succeed both professionally and personally.
3. Communication Skills
How we speak, write, and listen are so important—from the job application, resumé, and interviewing stages through your time on the job. Good communication skills help you understand others, establish positive relationships, and perform well in your role. Think about your tone and choice of words when communicating verbally and be aware of your nonverbal communication—your body language, eye contact, and personal space boundaries. Show others that you are listening with purpose.
4. Teamwork
5. Confidence
Employers seek employees who demonstrate self-confidence in their actions and communication. Know what you do well, perform your job activities with confidence, be certain about your abilities, and be willing to make decisions without constant supervision.
